Herd some sheep, taste some whiskey, run the mountain marathon, watch and learn traditional dances, and watch the clans duke it out in the tugs-of-war.   3. Carolina Balloon Festival—October 18-20, 2019. For 45 years and counting, hot air balloon pilots and enthusiasts have been gathering in Statesville, NC to demonstrate their craft. The history of hot air ballooning in Statesville goes back to 1961 when the first founders of the concept got started in an empty chicken house in Iredell County. Now the annual festival features hundreds of hot air balloons that lift off from the very same fields where the first ballooners began. RV camping is available in the area for those who wish to be a part of the festival while enjoying the beautiful fall weather.
