RV Winter Maintenance

By Out-of-Doors Mart on January 20th, 2020 in Tips

Whether you’re a winter camper or your RV sits parked until spring, winter maintenance is important to keep your RV in good condition. Are you in search of an Airstream for sale in NC? If you’re thinking of purchasing one in the winter months, you’ll need to know how to maintain it and what features to look for if you plan to take it out on the road during the winter.

If your RV sits unused during the winter:

  • Drain the water system to prevent freezing. This includes clean water and wastewater tanks. Be sure to get all the water out of hoses and pipes.
  • Inspect and seal your roof. Make sure that any cracks are sealed to prevent leaks into your RV.
  • Inspect the seals on doors, windows, and sliding panels and seal any cracks or gaps.
  • If possible, park your RV under a shelter to protect the roof and body. Inside a garage or barn is best, but a carport is also good.
  • Cover your RV with a cover that is made for RVs. A plastic tarp is not recommended because moisture can get under it and it can easily blow and flap which can cause damage.
  • Check tire pressure and inflate tires to the recommended pressure. When tires lose pressure during storage it can cause damage to the tires.
  • Park on a flat, dry surface to keep tires in the best condition. Move your RV once a month to prevent the tires from sitting in the same position for too long.
  • The gas in your tank can go bad while sitting unused. Add a fuel stabilizer to prevent sticky deposits from forming in your gas tank.
  • Prevent pests from getting in by removing all food and placing rodent and ant traps in strategic locations around your RV.

If you go winter camping:

  • Be sure to get winter tires for safety while traveling on snowy or icy roads.
  • Make sure you have adequate insulation. Install or upgrade the insulation if you’re planning on camping in cold weather.
  • Seal windows and doors. Install window film and use heavy curtains.
  • Insulate the floor. Add a skirt to prevent wind from blowing up under your RV.
  • Protect your plumbing with heat tape. Place it around your freshwater and wastewater hoses to prevent freezing.
  • Drip faucets to prevent freezing pipes. Also, open kitchen cabinets and bathroom doors to allow the interior heat to reach the pipes.
  • Add a small amount of antifreeze to holding tanks.
  • Check your RV batteries, which can struggle more in cold weather.
  • Use antifreeze in your engine and consider an engine block heater.
  • Inspect and tune-up your RV furnace to make sure it’s working properly.
