Tow a car behind your motorhomeTowing a car behind your motorhome is a great way to add mobility to your camping experience. With that said, you need to tow your car safely to avoid trouble as the miles roll by. It’s not necessarily difficult to tow a car safely, but you do need to have the right equipment and a little bit of knowledge.

Use the Right Equipment

This is where it all starts. Without a doubt, you need to be using the right equipment to tow a vehicle safely behind your motorhome. If you cut corners on the equipment you use, you’ll only be putting yourself and others at risk. Only buy your towing equipment from reputable dealers, and make sure the equipment you choose is rated sufficiently for the vehicle you intend to tow.

Two Main Options

The two options on the table for towing your vehicle are two wheels down and four wheels down. This is exactly as it sounds – with the first option, only the back two wheels are on the ground, while the second option keeps all four down as you drive. As you might imagine, it’s simpler to town your vehicle while keeping all four wheels down on the road, but this won’t be a viable option for all cars.

The best place to look for advice on towing your vehicle is the owner’s manual. You should be able to find instructions on what kind of towing is allowed, or if you can tow it at all. If the owner’s manual is not providing the information you need, contact the dealer directly to ask this question. Towing in a manner that is not compatible with the design of your vehicle could do serious damage, so you don’t want to get this wrong.

Think Light When You Shop

If you are going to be buying a new vehicle to tow behind your motorhome, think about keeping things as light as possible. A lightweight vehicle is less work for your motorhome to pull, so you should get better mileage and better performance going up hills. These days, there are plenty of small passenger cars on the market that comes with a low curb weight and still have room for passengers and a bit of cargo. Most likely, you’ll only be using the vehicle for little errands and quick outings, so something small and efficient is the way to go.

Get It Off the Ground

Finally, if you find that you are not supposed to tow your vehicle with its wheels on the ground, you might be able to get a trailer to simply pull it along behind you. This option is friendly to the vehicle, of course, since it is completely off the road. On the downside, there will be more pressure put on your motorhome to tow this way, so be sure you aren’t exceeding the tow rating for your rig.
