What are Common RV Modifications?

By Out-of-Doors Mart on December 1st, 2020 in Tips

RVs come in a variety of models, some more deluxe than others. Many features come standard and most models of RVs and other features are considered upgrades or modifications. Some are worth the added cost to make camping more convenient. If you’re looking at RVs in Tennessee, here are the most common upgrades buyers are willing to spring for.

  • RV Backup Camera. If you’re new to RV driving or even if you have a good bit of experience, a backup camera can make driving and parking much easier. Some cameras merely show you the view from the back of your RV on a screen in your dashboard. Others have increased safety features such as a beep or seat vibration to alert you when you are getting too close to something.

  • Better Quality Mattresses. The mattresses that come standard on many models, even some of the elite models, tend to be lackluster. You will likely find them too thin or too hard or just uncomfortable. Upgrading to a better mattress, at least in the master bedroom, will be something you’ll never regret.

  • Solar Power. Installing solar panels on your RV has many advantages. Of course they are environmentally friendly, but also incredibly convenient. Solar panels are capable of charging your RV battery even when you are not hooked up to electricity. This is especially helpful if you do a lot of boondocking.

  • LED Lights. The type of lighting in your RV matters in a variety of ways. LED lights use less energy, which can save your battery and sometimes cost you less in electrical hookups. LEDs are also brighter, lighting both the interior and exterior as clearly as possible for safety and functionality.

  • Storage Bay Locks. The storage bays, or the storage compartments built into your RV’s exterior, have common locks that all keys of a similar type can open. Keys labeled CH751 are all the same, meaning there could be thousands of people with the same type of key who could easily access your storage bays. That is, unless you upgrade to new locks with an original set of keys.

  • Additional Lithium Batteries. Your RV will likely come with one or two heavy duty batteries, but you may need more power. Purchasing additional batteries is wise, and while you’re at it, make them lithium. Lithium batteries are worth the higher cost because they last longer and are lower maintenance.

  • Shower/Faucet Heads. The shower heads that come standard in RV showers are not always the best. If you like good water pressure, a better shower head is a worthwhile upgrade. Faucet heads, especially the one in the kitchen, may also need to be upgraded for washing dishes and hands.

  • Bumper Mount. Think you might need a little more storage on your camping trips? A bumper mount attaches to the back bumper of your RV and is ideal for hauling bikes, storage totes, coolers, kayaks, and more. It’s basically an exterior shelf for things that don’t necessarily need to stay dry.

  • WiFi Repeater. It can be difficult to get a WiFi signal when you’re camping, even when the campground offers it. Adding a WiFi repeater to your RV can help boost your connection and increase the speed. You may even get a connection where you weren’t able to without one.

  • Automatic Stabilizing/Leveling Gear. One of the trickiest parts of setting up camp is getting your RV sufficiently stabilized and leveled out. Automatic leveling and stabilizing systems do the work for you, taking the guesswork out of the process.

  • Vent Fans. Proper ventilation in your RV is important for many reasons. For one, it can help keep the camper cool and help you save energy on your AC usage. It also helps to keep the air fresh when many people are living in a small area (and sharing one bathroom). Standard vent fans are not the best quality to begin with and tend to need frequent replacement. Save some time and just upgrade them now.
