5 Tips for Driving in Winter Weather

By Out-of-Doors Mart on January 20th, 2020 in Tips

Driving in winter weather can be difficult in a small vehicle, let alone in a motorhome or towing a travel trailer. Drivers should use extreme caution and follow these winter driving tips. Looking for an Airstream for sale in NC? Be sure to check the tires if you think you’ll be traveling during the winter in areas where snow and ice are possible.

Know the Difference in Handling

When you’re towing a travel trailer or driving an RV, it will handle much differently than a car. Just because you have experience driving your car or SUV in snow or ice doesn’t mean you will be able to do so just as easily with an RV. For example, motorhomes are rear-wheel drive, which is different than a car with front-wheel drive. Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you, brake slowly, and reduce your speed.

Get Winter Tires and Snow Chains

It’s a good idea to spring for the winter tires if you know you’ll be traveling during the winter in areas where winter weather is common. Snow chains are another addition that can help when sudden winter weather takes you by surprise. Tire chains are easy to store and travel with.

Check Batteries

The last thing you want is to get stuck with a dead battery in cold weather. Make sure the battery in your motorhome or towing vehicle is in good quality. Make sure there is no corrosion around the connections which can cause a perfectly good battery to appear dead. It’s also a good idea to check the other batteries in your RV before going camping in cold weather. You’ll want to be sure you can heat your camper.

Pack Emergency Supplies

Pack bottled water and non-perishable snacks just in case you get stuck in the snow or in a weather-related traffic jam. Include an ice scraper, road salt, cat litter for traction, and even a small snow shovel to get out of a tough spot.

Don’t Drive in Winter Weather

One option is always to simply change your plans and stay home. It may not be worth the risk to head out on treacherous roads in an RV, especially on mountains and curvy roads. Trips can be postponed or shortened if necessary to avoid unpleasant weather.
